Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Zak Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes regarding the team environment as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in several interviews following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

But, following the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "raw" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate place in the side, Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second knock on day four, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is noise from the outside. There's no chat like that on Ollie amongst the players," he finished.
